We are currently researching which vehicle we should use as a base for our overland build.

We want a base vehicle that is going to be:
  • Reliable
  • Easy to maintain
  • Able to obtain parts globally
  • Decent clearance / off road capability
Which vehicle would you recommend?

Without more detail it would be hard to advise you.

Details like

How many people in the vehicle
Where do you want to travel to
How long will you be travelling
Do you want to go off road
Budget
Etc

All of these will help to get the right advice

Were you able to acquire a base truck for overland? I've been using my Ford F-150 for daily driving, overlanding , and off-roading. It is easy to maintain and modify exactly to my needs. I'm using aftermarket parts depending on the condition of the place and terrain. I got most of it from 4WheelOnline.

If your priorities are global parts support + reliability, I’d pick the platform based on service network first, then build around it.

A simple framework that helps:
- Global support: Toyota Land Cruiser 70/79, Isuzu/Fuso class cab-over, or Ford Super Duty depending on continent
- Payload math first: real build weights usually land 20–30% heavier than planned
- Tire/wheel standardization: pick sizes you can source in-country, not just at home
- Mechanical simplicity: field-serviceable systems beat complexity when you’re remote

In North America, heavy-duty domestic chassis are usually strong for larger expedition builds; for true global loops, Toyota platforms usually win on parts access.
