I thought I had read somewhere that when shipping a vehicle to South Africa, they will tax all spare parts brought with the vehicle. Can anyone confirm this? If it's true, how to they value parts and what tax do they charge?
If the vehicle is under a Carnet then normally it covers the contents as well so long as they are to be used or exported with the vehicle. This includes a reasonable selection of spares or consumables. In my experience if the spares are out of sight then the problem does not arise unless you get a particularly nasty customs official. So smile and be nice is the order of the day!
