My wife and I have owned a Volvo XC70 from when we got it new in 2006 and it has now done over 200,000 miles. I have always had a desire to drive from England to Cape Town and now, with an ageing XC70 in the drive which owes us nothing, it seems like a good idea to see how much of an adventure vehicle this typical soft-roader can become.
We are not new to adventures having circumnavigated the world in 2017-2018, me as crew on one of the Clipper Round The World boats and Bronwen following from port to port as a supporter for me and for the race generally. We also spent 6 months in Australia which included a 4,000km drive in a Nissan Pathfinder from Darwin to Brisbane. This was a trip that we loved and we should have been back in Oz this year for a trip from Brisbane to the Red Heart together with some Brisbane friends. However, COVID has put paid to that adventure.
Instead, I am preparing our car, trying to make it into an expedition camper. Our first trip will, all being well, be to Morocco in September with a friend in another car.
I will try to document the building of our car in a new thread!
