My wife and I bought this car in Chile to travel around South America. We are currently driving to Bogota, Colombia where we plan to end our trip and sell the car in early August. As the car is registered in Chile, it would need to be returned to Chile at some point (either to use personally or sell to a local buyer). I am not an expert on the laws but my understanding is that the registration cannot be easily transferred to another country. I have found people who can manage the title transfer process from Chile while the transfer takes place in Colombia (you do not need to be a Chilean citizen or permanent resident to do this).
Summary
The Jimny is a fun and reassuring car for exploring South America. In our travels through South America we have encountered all types of tricky terrain: thick mud, snow, giant potholes, windy gravely roads, and steep hills. The Jimny has performed outstandingly in all occasions, which should give you peace-of-mind for your trip planning. Also, we have navigated cities with narrow roads, tight parking spaces, and chaotic traffic. The Jimny’s compact shape has made us grateful that we didn’t have a larger 4wd vehicle. Our Jimny is in great condition, and has been treated very well. We have really loved this car and we hope the next owner will too!
