Hi Everyone,

My name is Riaan and I am South African, based in Cape Town. I have been an outdoor, camping and travelling enthusiast for a while , but the goal I'm working towards is travelling completely self sufficient - for extended periods of time.

Currently I have a Toyota Fortuner 3.0 D4D Automatic 4x4, which is an SUV type vehicle, but I am currently looking to upgrade to Toyota Hilux (Xtra of Double Cab).

There is obviously pros and cons to both the SUVs and Trucks (bakkie as we refer to it here in RSA), but I feel that perhaps the Fortuner is not the best platform - I might just have a complete misperception. Space is a consideration, and I feel that with SUVs it is inevitable that one will need to eventually go to the roof (for more than just your RTT).

I also have a camping trailer for longer trips, that allows for more comfortable living, with a full kitchen unit, water tank and lots of space. However, I do not necessarily want to tow this all the way through Southern Africa.

I have travelled through large parts of South Africa and Namibia, but I know there is still so much to see in both these countries. I have only travelled to Botswana for work (Kasane), but I know it has so much to offer and would love to do longer trips through the Kgalagadi and other parts of the country.

Look forward to read about what everyone has to share and learning for the wealth of knowledge available on this platform.

Welcome to the forum, there's nothing wrong with the Fortuner, you will be able to go to 95% of places around Africa, just space will be a little bit limited, but otherwise it will be absolutely fine with the rooof tent an awning, and some basic cooking facilities...

I guess consider how many of you there will be, and whether you really do need the extra space will not? we travelled it in a Toyota Prado (two people), it was absolutely fine, we mixed camping, and staying in cheap accommodation when it suited...

Thank you for the feedback and input.

I've been toying with the idea of getting another Fortuner, instead of the Hilux. Still leaning toward the Hilux at the moment, but there are clear advantages to an SUV. Especially when it comes to a daily driver.

I don't particularly want to be removing the second row of seats (middle), so I think that's when space become harder to deal with.
