Guide to Free Overland GPS Maps
The majority of GPS units come pre-installed with local routable maps for the region where the unit is purchased, however once you leave your region you will be required to purchase and install new maps.
Garmin North America and Mexico Coverage
Most maps these days are expensive, reaching up to £130 per region. Once you are outside Europe or North America, the coverage, accuracy and quality of the purchased maps drop, and in some spots no coverage is provided at all.
Garmin South America Coverage
Luckily today in the open source world there are many products filling the gaps, on most occasions these maps are free and easy to install!
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is one of the best known projects, which is continually being updated and provides truly global coverage. This website allows you to download routable open street map data in a format compilable for use with either PC software or dedicated satellite navigation devices.
Throughout Central and South East Asia we found the OpenStreetMaps indispensable, and would recommend them in preference to paid for maps.
